ree

Molding for Beginners: The Challenge Starts Here

Curious about silicone molding but don’t know where to begin?

In our last molding workshop, many participants started from scratch. After lots of trial and error, they shared:

💬 “Just happy my first mold didn’t fail completely!”
💬 “I wish we had more successful and failed samples to compare.”
💬 “Didn’t realize there were so many types of materials! So many possibilities in molding!”

Today, we’re sharing answers to some common molding questions. If you’ve been wondering about these too, maybe you’re already ready to take your first step into the world of mold making.

Q1: What kinds of silicone are there, and how are they different?
A1: Silicone mainly falls into two categories: condensation-cure and addition-cure.

✅ Condensation-cure is usually cheaper and more accessible, but it’s more sensitive to temperature and has a higher failure rate—commonly used for basic mold-making.

✅ Addition-cure offers higher stability, better precision, and minimal shrinkage—great for professional or detailed molds. However, it can react poorly with some materials (like certain 3D printed parts) and may fail to cure.

In our last class, we used addition-cure silicone. For the next session, we’ll be using a mid-to-high grade condensation-cure silicone so you can experience both types and learn how to make the most of them.

Q2: Where can I buy these materials? What’s the most cost-effective way to get small quantities?
A2: After class, we provide info on where to buy materials. The materials used in class are also available in small quantities, and students get a special alumni discount. You can even team up to get free shipping from the original supplier.

Q3: Do I need experience for my first class? What if I’ve never done this before?
No worries if you’re a complete beginner! Before class, we’ll ask you to fill out a short form to understand your needs. The instructor will tailor the lessons based on everyone’s background. Your first mold may not be perfect, but through hands-on experience, you’ll learn where to begin and how to improve.

This course isn’t just about making molds—
It’s about learning to communicate with materials.

Start small, don’t fear failure, and transform your handmade creations into repeatable pieces—maybe even the first step toward selling your work.

📌 Comment “I want to mold!” and we’ll DM you info on the next workshop and examples of student projects!
